How Game Download Speeds Work: Mbps vs MB/s

The most common misunderstanding when downloading large games on Steam, PlayStation Network, or Xbox Live is the difference between Megabits per second (Mbps) and Megabytes per second (MB/s). Internet service providers market download bandwidth in bits, whereas game launchers measure storage file sizes in Bytes.

Because there are 8 bits in every byte, a 100 Mbps internet plan can theoretically transfer a maximum of 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. In real-world environments, TCP packet framing, SSL handshakes, and Wi-Fi signal loss reduce this by an additional 10%, giving you approximately 11.2 MB/s of continuous payload download speed.

Why Steam and Epic Games Download Slower Than Speed Tests

  • Real-Time CPU Decompression: Modern games do not download as flat raw files; they download heavily compressed patch chunks. Your CPU must decompress these chunks while downloading. If you have an older processor, CPU bottlenecks will stall your download.
  • Storage Disk Write Limits: Installing a 100 GB game like Call of Duty or Warzone writes hundreds of gigabytes to your drive. A slow 5400 RPM hard drive or heavily utilized SATA SSD will throttle the download stream.
  • CDN Server Overload on Release Days: When massive game updates launch (such as a new Fortnite season or GTA patch), millions of players hit content delivery networks (Akamai, Cloudflare, Fastly) at once, causing server-side bandwidth throttling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does high download speed improve gaming ping?

Not necessarily. Download bandwidth is the volume of data your line can carry simultaneously (like the width of a pipe), while ping is the round-trip speed of a single packet (the flow speed). A 50 Mbps connection with low jitter will provide much better gaming hit registration than a congested 1 Gbps connection suffering from bufferbloat.

Can I play online games while downloading an update?

Unless you limit your download bandwidth in Steam/Battle.net settings, downloading at 100% capacity will flood your router buffers, causing massive latency spikes and high packet loss (bufferbloat). Always cap download speed to 70% of your max bandwidth while gaming.
